Every year people start or reset their health goals for the new year. Some New Year’s Resolutions have goals to exercise more, trim down, and this year what I’m hearing across the board is “lose the extra pounds brought on by the COVID pandemic.” It’s wise to revisit our health goals not just annually but each month to assess whether goals are realistic, to check progress, and determine if they still apply.
Ask yourself these key questions:
- Have you put action steps in place to achieve your health goals?
For instance, if exercise is one of your goals, have you carved out time on your calendar daily to make exercise a priority? - Is your goal measurable?
‘I’m going to exercise more’ is vague, whereas, ‘I’m going to walk for 30 minutes 4 times a week or do yoga twice a week,’ are more specific and measurable. Maybe it’s as simple as tracking your steps taken daily via the free Health App on your iPhone as you walk more this year. Strive to increase your daily steps with walking outdoors. - Have you engaged the right resources to help you achieve your health goals?
Have you hired a personal trainer, nutritionist, or health coach to get you started, devoted time on your calendar to exercise, stocked your refrigerator/freezer with healthy fruits and veggies? - Have you educated yourself as to what healthy foods will provide the best fuel for your body for your exercise program?
